Free software installation for electronic medical records: OpenEMR

The software for clinical history can be proprietary or public, depending on the type of license adopted by the author. In addition, they may have cost or be free. OpenEMR is a clinical history computerization solution that offers the greatest advantages in terms of cost, ease of use, support and security, and has the advantages of being public and free.

OPENEMR is an international project, with more than 45,000 installations in all the world, and hundreds of active developers. Because of its size, it has more than 1000 features,  Openemr has many features, well above most commercial systems. The OpenEMR project is managed by Sourceforge.net, the platform more widespread for open source and free projects.

Open source means that anyone can access the source code of the software, and make any changes it considers necessary. The platform provides structures to avoid that the projects branch out too much and lose effectiveness and utility. The SourceForge.net platform allows to count the descent of the product, differentiating the popular projects from the individuals or from small groups. It also identifies the members of each project, and provides communication and control systems between them. The free open source software published in a cooperative way has an advantage and a disadvantage: it is transparent and modifiable, but there is no vendor that is responsible in case of inconveniences. But a committed and active community can offer support, while ensuring the maintenance of the project, and the evolution and maturation of the product. All software that claims to be open source must offer a platform like SourceForge, where different aspects are guaranteed: availability – transparency – communication – traceability – evolution.

This free software for medical records does not run on a shared server but requires root access to the server. Preferably a Linux server is required, although it can run on Windows under emulation (XAMPP package). After installation, several security holes must be closed for XAMPP, Apache, and MySQL. There will also be 10 or more points that need to be configured depending on the type of institution, the number of users and patients, the different attention centers, the security requirements, the extent of the software’s features, etc. That is why we offer to support users, attaching to the software the advice of a company with knowledge, programming skills and experience with the product.
